I saw Bobby Parker perform a couple of times (in New Orleansd and the Blues Estafette), but he didn't sing it - didn't sing Watch Your Step either, which was disappointing. He was billed as 'Mr Bent Out Of Shape', after another track he recorded, so he was definitely bitter and twisted!<br />Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03534654679371832525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21258459.post-45971363251365179252015-02-23T15:35:52.679+00:002015-02-23T15:35:52.679+00:00Actually "You Got What It Takes" wasn...Actually "You Got What It Takes" wasn't written by Berry Gordy, Billy 'Roquel' Davis and Gwen Gordy at all - it was brazenly lifted wholesale by Berry Gordy from its real writer Bobby Parker, who'd had the song out on Vee-Jay in 1957, and I don't believe ever managed to get any recompense during his lifetime. Of course nobody knew this in 1959. When Parker toured the UK ten years later under the aegis of Mike Vernon, I remember him coming across as a dynamic performer, but a somewhat bitter and twisted individual. Now I realise he had a lot to be bitter and twisted about! Pete Wnoreply@blogger.com
