Big Jim Sullivan

Guitarist Big Jim Sullivan - the session musician who played on over 1000 hit singles in the sixties and seventies - has died aged 71. He was given his first break by Jack Good on the Oh Boy! programme and toured with Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran shortly before Cochran's death in 1960. From there he went on to play on records by a host of British artists, including Marty Wilde, Frank Ifield, Georgie Fame, Brian Poole, Dave Berry, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Small Faces, Donovan and Cliff Richard during the sixties before joining Tom Jones on tour and becoming a friend of Elvis Presley in Las Vegas. Later he joined up with Derek Lawrence to form the Retreat record label and was a member of the James Last Orchestra for nine years.
Jim recorded some material under his own name, including a cover of Ral Donner's You Don't Know What He's Got in 1961and an album called Sitar Beat in 1967.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fLY20rGfXw

Big Jim should be remembered for his session work on some classic recordings. On this evidence, recordings under his own name are best forgotten.
